Origins

Steve and Kim Viker own/operate a beef cattle seedstock business named, Genetic Resources, which is located near Lanesboro, MN. Genetic Resources’ goal is providing beef genetics to assist clients meet their financial goals.

“People that tend to gravitate toward non-traditional pathways,” is perhaps a fitting way to summarize Steve and Kim. Raising Morgan horses played a large part in Kim’s background, while Steve’s background included ties to commercial cow-calf and cattle feeding operations. Separate educational pathways led them to various parts of the United States that eventually crossed when they met in the southern US. Their common passion for learning, implementing technology and producing genetically improved animals was their common goal. Eventually, the “horse girl” proposed to the “cow guy”, the team formed, and new adventures began.

They purchased a farm in an area of MN known as the “driftless region”. This unique area is characterized by an abundance of limestone, diverse topography, caves, underground streams, bluffs, and valleys. The “driftless region” was not shaped by glacial movements like much of the northern US. As a result, Genetic Resources cattle thrive on land that includes natural springs, thermal vents, areas with two inches of topsoil and steep ravines.
