Evolution

The two decades of Angus cattle that proceeded the present-day Genetic Resources herd were comprised of mainstream genetics of the era. These popular genetics were the typical “once-in-a-life-time bulls”, the “next-great” bull from some of the “great” Angus herds. While the latest and greatest genetics from those eras made up the prior herd, the realization eventually became clear the genetic diversity and lack of consistency did not match the vision for Genetic Resources. Despite use of numerous “once-in-a-lifetime” bulls, the herd was comprised of cattle lacking consistent type, high maintenance and hard doing. Genetic Resources simply did not have the inclination or time for high input or inconsistent cattle. The philosophy at Genetic Resources changed to using cattle that worked for us, instead of us working for them. As a result of this change in philosophy the herd was dispersed, and identification of new genetics began.

The cattle in mind for the present-day Genetic Resources herd were not easy to find. Eventually, the cattle were sourced, adapted to the management, feed sources and climate of Southeast MN.

With changes in management strategies, breeding philosophies and genetics, the cattle began to move toward the desired goals.  There were bumps, twists and turns, even mistakes along the way to redefining our herd. However, Genetic Resources remained committed to the goal of assisting our clients to improve the financial stability of their beef cow herds through genetic selection.
